Romney To Win Florida, Santorum Fades!

It looks like Santorum is going to be sore pressed to make a dent in the front runners in Florida.  With all sympathy for his current family situation, I pray for health for him and his daughter.  Such times are heart rending for a parent.  We trust that his faith in Jesus will be a great comfort during these times.

The results in Florida make it seem plain to me that we need the field to be narrowed to Romney and Gingrich so that by Super Tuesday, or before, the presidential race can begin.  The Republican establishment seems to be leaning heavily toward Romney while the 'average' republican and the evangelicals are leaning toward Gingrich.  Of the two, Romney has the smallest amount of moral baggage by far.  While Romney clearly has the biggest struggle with committed evangelicals and conservative Catholics who would take exception to his Mormon profession and possibly his record on abortion and gay marriage.  Romney is the more moderate and grounded candidate at a time when the polity in this Nation is showing a desire for the middle, for reason, for government that focuses on the core issues.

If Romney were an evangelical christian I would vote for him without question at this point.  I do not like the Bain issue because on the one hand it is venture capital and corporate raiderism, on the other hand it is entrepeneurship at a level that shows prowess.  For me, I am now going to have to really dig in and examine history, my own beliefs, and what is at stake.  Never in the history of our country have we faced the choice of voting for either a person with so much baggage and braggadocio (Gingrich), a person with proven ability to undermine the christian faith (Obama), or a person who probably believes that Jesus and Satan are brothers (Romney.)

Much has been written as to whether a vote for President is to be a vote for Jesus or a vote for the best possible alternative done in faith.  From an evangelical perspective we seem to have come to the end of the tracks.  In one sense we can be happy that the cheap suit of acceptability often worn by candidates for high office is not such an easy fit.  Perhaps in 2012 Christians for the first time in our history have to see politics for the imperfect thing that it really is.

May the Lord bring to leadership in our nation that person which benefits God's agenda, and He will!
